Born 1957 in Moers, university studies of physics, mathematics, philosophy, and history of science in Bochum, Hamburg, Oxford. Academic positions at the Institute for Advanced Studies Princeton, University of Hamburg, MPI for History of Science Berlin. From 1999 to 2010 full professor for history and philosophy of science at the University of Bern.

Since October 2010 full professor for History of Ancient Science at the Humboldt University Berlin. Scholarly fields cover the history of ancient science from Babylonian astronomy to the scientific revolution, methods of scientific discovery and methodology of causal reasoning.
